The Department of English, Govt. T.Romana College, organized an Invited Lecture for the Major students of the Department on September 26, 2025. The invitee for the event was Hannah Lalhlanpuii, author of two acclaimed novels in English: When Blackbirds Fly and Postcard from the Lushai Brigade. Besides these, Hannah also has several poems and short stories which have appeared in different anthologies. Her lecture was titled ‘Writing Historical Fiction in the Mizo Context’, wherein she spoke about the importance of remembering history as shaping one’s present. The lecture focused on the process of writing: the research, the empathy, sensitivity and patience required in bringing oral history into perspective. She also spoke about the discipline necessary in the art of writing. Students were encouraged to take up creative writing projects in English, both as a way of developing latent talents, as well as paving a way to showcase Mizoram and the Mizo people to the rest of the English-speaking world. This point was strongly advocated by the speaker especially in the present scenario where there continues to be very little to be read about Mizo history and culture in the creative sphere. A lively interaction between the students and the speaker followed the session, which was chaired by Dr Vanlalchami, in the presence of other faculty members of the Department.

Inauguration of Girls Common Room

The first ever Govt. T. Romana College Girls Common Room was inaugurated on 16.9.2025. Dr. Jenifer Lalbiakdiki, Principal inaugurated the Girls Common Room in the presence of some faculties, Students Union Leaders and selected students.

Historical Tour to Alexandrapur, Kathichera, Assam

The Department of History went on a historical tour on 29th August 2025 to Alexandrapur, Kathichera, Assam, sponsored by Barak Valley Cement Ltd.

The tour aimed to provide students with a firsthand experience of a significant historical site where James Winchester, the tea plantation manager, was killed, and his daughter, Mary Winchester (Zoluti), a 6-year-old, was captured and held hostage during a raid on the tea plantation by Bengkhuaia, the Sailam Chief, and his men in 1871.
The journey began at 5:30 a.m. from Aizawl. After travelling for about 6 hours, the group reached Alexandrapur at around 1:00 p.m. On reaching the site, students explored the area where this important episode in colonial and Mizo history unfolded. Faculty members briefed the students on the historical background, including the causes and consequences of the raid, the role of local chiefs like Bengkhuaia, and the colonial response that followed.
The visit not only enhanced the students’ understanding of regional history but also helped them connect classroom learning with real-world historical sites. After spending a few hours at Alexandrapur, the team began the return journey at around 4:00 p.m. and finally reached Aizawl at around 1:00 a.m.
The tour was both educational and enriching, offering students valuable insights into the complex interactions between colonial powers and Mizo communities.

Awareness and Field Visit Programme of Rural Development Schemes

The Awareness and Field Visit Programme of Rural Development Schemes was held on 29th August 2025 at the Directorate of Rural Development, Conference Hall, Chanmari. The event was graced by Prof. Lalnilawma, Hon’ble Minister, Rural Development & Administration Department, as the Chief Guest.

The programme was jointly organized by the Directorate of Rural Development, Government of Mizoram, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology (Final Semester), Govt. T. Romana College.

The main objective of the programme was to create awareness about various Rural Development (RD) Schemes being implemented in Mizoram and to provide students and participants with an opportunity to gain practical exposure through field visits. Such initiatives aim to bridge the gap between policy formulation and ground-level implementation, ensuring that people, especially youth and students, understand the importance and impact of rural development schemes in enhancing livelihood, infrastructure, and overall socio-economic growth in rural areas.

The Chief Guest, in his address, highlighted the significance of rural development in achieving inclusive growth and urged students to actively participate in spreading awareness of government schemes. The programme also emphasized the role of academic institutions in complementing government efforts to bring sustainable development to rural communities.

This awareness campaign served as an important platform for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and community participation, paving the way for more effective implementation of RD schemes in the state.
