For years the college has been running in rented houses and a small building donated by Mr. T.Romana(L). With the increase in population and increase in the rate of high school graduates in the state, the space and infrastructure is highly inadequate to run a college to equip it with all that is necessary for a friendly academic environment. Fortunately after a long strive, the government of Mizoram has allotted a spacious plot of land at Republic Vengthlang which is almost vacant except for a small building with four small rooms. But the land is spacious enough to be adorned into one of the most beautiful and fruitful college campus within the city area.
Govt. T.Romana College has a very humble beginning. Its establishment was initiated by the state’s Students’ Union who realized that the only solution to provide opportunity for higher education and accommodate the economically and academically disadvantaged students in the year 1992 was to open a new college as the sudden rise in the number of successful candidates in the HSLC
made it impossible for all to find admission in the few existing colleges of the state. Ever since then, the college has cradled economically and academically disadvantaged students who have failed to avail admission in other colleges of the city.
Mr.T.Romana (L), a prominent citizen of the city was approached and requested to transform his small private school into a private college. The college was established on 3rd June 1992 and named after its’ donor. For years the college has been running in rented houses and a small building donated by Mr. T.Romana(L). With the increase in population and increase in the rate of high school graduates in the state, the space and infrastructure became highly inadequate to run a college to equip it with all that is necessary for a friendly academic environment with very few colleges existing to meet the demand of the state, the college grew in strength and a time came when the student enrolment crossed over 2000 and the meager infrastructure which was meant only for a small school was no longer enough to run a big college. In spite of the poor infrastructure, the sincerity and hard work of the principle and the working staff, the college has leapt towards development. It received official recognition by the University in 1995 and is included under the 2F and 12B of the UGC Act of 1996. It was provincialised in 2007 to become Govt. T.Romana College and was accredited B Grade by NAAC in 2014. However, though the principal and staff have the potential to upgrade the college to a world class level, it’s limited space and infrastructure hampered it’s growth. The College instituted a Search Committee for site and infrastructure which has strived very hard for years to attain adequate plot of land which could accommodate all the necessary buildings and rooms. It had been a task impossible. Fortunately after a long strive; the government of Mizoram has allotted a spacious plot of land at Republic Vengthlang in the end of the year2016,where the land is spacious enough to be adorned into one of the most beautiful and fruitful college campus within the city area. A new spacious, academic friendly, clean and green college campus will help humanity in general, by permitting students with financial problems to clear their dues in instalments and give them concessions wherever it has possible. In due time with better infrastructure the college will enhance its various schemes that provides students with free training in skill developments in computers, spoken Hindi, spoken English, Mobile repairing, Cultural Dance classes, taekwando classes, course on Jurisprudence, cooking and baking classes, etc. In other words, the development in the college infrastructure enhances quality education and caters needs for an all round development for the students and the society.
The state of Mizoram and the Mizo are much influenced by the westerners because the religion, their alphabets and the modern lifestyle can be credited to the Christian missionaries. Though, the Mizo have benefitted a great deal from the colonizers, the youth need to retrieve their traditional cultural values and preserve their folksongs, dances and folklore that could be in danger of being forgotten. The experiences of the insurgency and the influence of the colonizers resulted in non acceptance of the ways and lifestyle of mainland Indians or the rest of India and stayed apart from the rest of the Indians. Therefore, it is the mission of the college to put an effort to retrieve and revive the precious culture and tradition of the Mizo and promote UNITY AND Integrity of India by organising as many as possible cultural programmes, Exchange Programmes and send students to different such programmes outside the state for exposure and to experience the culture and tradition of fellow Indians. In such exposures and cultural trips, students that may not afford to visit different places at their own expense are given opportunity to do so.
The mission of the college, since its inception, is to promote and support weaker sections of society, especially the economically and academically disadvantaged students that are admitted in the college from the remotest area of the state. The College is known as ‘the College of Grace’ and its Motto is ‘Service to Mankind’. As the weaker section of human kind is the woman race, the college makes it a mission to uplift the status of women and equip the girl students to stand equal with their counterparts in all spheres of life. Various Programs, certificate courses and value added courses are conducted keeping in mind the elevation of the status of women.
The Strives hard and encourages all activities that promote saving and preserving of the natural environment. Its various cells, NSS, NCC, etc. have have volunteered and reached out to help government organizations and non government organizations in activities relating to environmental issues. Each student is inspired to participate in the global effort to help maintain eco-balance and take their first step by keeping the college campus clean, green and plastic free.
